It is tempting to save money by attempting electrical repairs yourself. But when it comes to fuse boxes and consumer units, DIY is not just dangerous — it is illegal. Every year in the UK, people are seriously injured or killed attempting electrical work they are not qualified to do. Here's why your fuse box should always be left to a professional Edinburgh electrician.
It's Illegal — Part P Building Regulations
Under Part P of the Building Regulations, any electrical work in a dwelling must be carried out by a competent person and notified to building control. This includes all work on consumer units, fuse boards, distribution boards and the circuits connected to them.
Only electricians registered with a competent person scheme (like NICEIC or SELECT in Scotland) can self-certify their work. If you carry out the work yourself, you must pay your local authority to inspect it — and if it fails, you face enforcement action. Most DIY fuse box work fails inspection because it does not meet BS 7671 standards.
The Real Dangers of DIY Fuse Box Work
Electric Shock & Electrocution
Even with the main switch in the "off" position, some consumer unit terminals remain live — particularly the main incoming cables from the meter. Touching these can deliver a fatal electric shock.
Arc Flash & Explosion
A short circuit inside a consumer unit can create an arc flash — a explosive release of energy that causes severe burns, blindness and hearing damage. Arc flash temperatures can exceed 19,000°C. Professional electricians use arc flash PPE and insulated tools for a reason.
Fire Risk from Incorrect Connections
Loose connections, incorrect cable terminations and wrong breaker ratings all generate heat. Heat builds up over time, degrading insulation and eventually causing a fire. Many house fires start at the consumer unit.
Invalidated Insurance
If you carry out unnotified electrical work and there is subsequently a fire or injury, your home insurance can refuse to pay out. Insurers will ask for the Electrical Installation Certificate — which you cannot legally issue yourself.
No Way to Test Properly
Professional electricians use calibrated test equipment costing thousands of pounds to verify every circuit after work. DIYers have no way to perform insulation resistance, earth loop impedance or RCD functional testing — meaning dangerous faults go undetected.
Resale & Letting Problems
When you sell or let your property, solicitors and letting agents require valid electrical certificates. Unnotified DIY work must be disclosed and will typically require full re-inspection by a qualified electrician before proceeding.
What You CAN Safely Do Yourself
There are a few safe, legal tasks any homeowner can perform without calling an electrician:
- Reset a tripped MCB by switching it back to the "on" position
- Replace a blown plug fuse (3A, 5A or 13A) in an appliance plug
- Switch off the main isolator in an emergency
- Identify which circuit has tripped by checking the consumer unit labels
Everything else — opening the consumer unit, replacing breakers, adding circuits, replacing the board — must be done by a qualified electrician.
