FAQs

Common Questions

Can't find your answer? Give us a call on 07940 071963.

Yes — a burning smell from a consumer unit is a serious warning sign of arcing, overheating connections or insulation damage. Switch off your main switch if safe to do so and call us immediately on 07940 071963. Do not ignore burning smells from any electrical equipment in your Edinburgh property.

Yes — in most cases a faulty MCB or RCD can be replaced as a direct component swap without replacing the full consumer unit. We carry a range of common MCB and RCD types. If the fault has caused damage to the board itself, replacement may be the safer option — we'll advise honestly.

If a circuit breaker won't stay in the 'on' position after resetting, there is still an active fault on that circuit. This could be a faulty appliance, damaged wiring or a failed MCB. We'll test the circuit systematically to identify the cause — don't force a breaker to stay on.

Cost depends on the fault. Simple MCB replacements or loose connections are relatively inexpensive. More extensive repairs or partial board replacements cost more. We confirm the price before starting any work — no surprises for Edinburgh clients.

If your Edinburgh fuse board is very old (pre-1980s), uses rewirable fuses, or lacks RCD protection, replacement is usually the better long-term investment. A repair on an inadequate board just prolongs use of outdated equipment. We'll give you an honest assessment of whether repair or replacement makes more sense.
