Common Questions

Can't find your answer? Give us a call on 07940 071963.

BS 7671 recommends that RCDs are tested at least every 6 months by the user (using the test button) and verified with a formal test instrument periodically — typically as part of an annual inspection or EICR. For Edinburgh landlords, RCD testing should be carried out at each tenancy change and as part of your regular compliance schedule.

Pressing the test button on your consumer unit's RCD confirms the mechanical trip mechanism works — but it doesn't verify the device trips within the required 30ms at 1x rated current or 40ms at 0.5x rated current. Only a calibrated RCD test instrument can confirm your Edinburgh home's protection is operating within the required parameters.

An RCD that doesn't trip within the required time effectively provides no electric shock protection. It should be replaced immediately. We carry common RCD types and can replace failed devices during the test visit across Edinburgh — your protection is restored the same day.

Yes — Edinburgh landlords should have RCDs tested regularly as part of their electrical maintenance obligations. An RCD that doesn't operate correctly represents a serious safety risk to tenants. RCD testing is included in our landlord compliance packages for Edinburgh properties.

An RCD protects multiple circuits from earth leakage — if one circuit has a fault, the RCD may disconnect all circuits it protects. An RCBO provides both overcurrent (like an MCB) and earth leakage (like an RCD) protection for a single circuit individually. Modern Edinburgh consumer units increasingly use RCBOs to provide more selective protection.

Yes — while a tripping RCD usually indicates a genuine earth leakage fault, some older or damaged RCDs become overly sensitive and trip at currents below their rated value. This is called nuisance tripping. We can test whether your Edinburgh home's RCD is tripping at the correct threshold and replace it if it's become hypersensitive or has developed a fault.
