Smoke and heat alarm installation Stow TD1

Scottish Law Compliant · Stow TD1Smoke & Heat Alarm Installation
Stow

Stow's A7 corridor properties, Gala Water valley cottages and rural farm buildings all fall under Scotland's 2022 interlinked alarm law. Many older Stow and Midlothian properties still have non-compliant standalone alarms. We replace them with fully interlinked, legally compliant systems — same-day certificates for rural TD1 properties.

Tolerable Standard Compliant
Scottish law since February 2022 requires all properties including Stow and rural TD1 cottages to have interlinked smoke alarms in living areas and hallways, a heat alarm in the kitchen, and CO detectors where required.
A7 Corridor Specialists
We cover the full A7 corridor from Edinburgh through Gorebridge, Stow and down to Galashiels. Rural Gala Water valley properties and farm cottages throughout TD1 are well within our regular service route.
Rural Farmhouse Compliance
Stow's older farmhouses and cottages often have solid-fuel Agas, open fires or oil boilers — all requiring CO detectors in addition to smoke and heat alarms. We assess each rural property fully before installation.
Battery Alarms for Remote Properties
Long-life sealed battery alarms are ideal for Stow's rural properties where running mains cables would be costly or impractical. Fully compliant under Scottish law, they interlink wirelessly with no disruption to stone or original fabric.
Fully Interlinked Systems
In remote rural properties near Stow where response times are longer, full alarm interlinking and early warning is even more critical. Every alarm must sound simultaneously — this is a legal requirement.

Yes — the Tolerable Standard applies to all Scottish domestic properties regardless of location, including rural properties along the A7 in Stow, Fountainhall, Heriot and throughout the Gala Water valley. There are no rural exemptions. All properties need interlinked smoke alarms in living areas and hallways, a heat alarm in the kitchen, and CO detectors where applicable.

CO detectors are required in every room with a solid-fuel, gas or oil-burning appliance. For a Stow farmhouse with an Aga and a separate wood burner in different rooms, you'll need a CO detector in each room. We identify all appliance locations during the property assessment and specify the exact requirements.

No — standalone alarms, regardless of age or manufacturer, have not met Scottish law since February 2022. All alarms must be part of a fully interlinked system that sounds simultaneously when any one device triggers. We replace non-compliant alarms in a single visit.

For a typical rural Stow cottage: one smoke alarm in the main living room, one smoke alarm in the hallway, one heat alarm in the kitchen, and CO detectors in rooms with appliances. Larger multi-storey properties need smoke alarms on every floor landing. We assess each property individually.

All private landlords in Scotland must ensure rental properties — including rural farm cottages near Stow — comply with the Tolerable Standard alarm requirements. This applies at the start of every tenancy. Certificates must be provided to tenants within 28 days of installation. We handle full alarm compliance for rural Borders landlords.

Yes — 10-year sealed battery alarms are fully compliant and designed specifically for properties where mains wiring is impractical. They interlink wirelessly, have a 10-year battery life, and meet all Scottish Tolerable Standard requirements. They're the most common choice we install in rural Stow and A7 corridor properties.

We travel the A7 corridor regularly and cover Stow and the surrounding TD1 area with availability typically within a few days. Most installations take 1–2 hours. For urgent compliance deadlines, contact us and we'll prioritise your Stow property.
