Common Questions

A socket that sparks when appliances are plugged in or unplugged needs prompt attention. Occasional brief sparking when plugging in is sometimes normal, but persistent sparking, burning smells or discolouration around the outlet is a sign of a loose connection or overheating — a potential fire risk. Stop using the socket and call us.

A dead socket is usually caused by a tripped circuit, a blown fuse in a fused spur, a broken internal connection or a failed socket. We test the circuit and socket to find the exact cause. It's worth checking your consumer unit for a tripped breaker before calling, but if nothing is tripped and the socket is still dead, there's a fault to investigate.

In most cases, yes — if the wiring behind the socket is undamaged, we can replace the faceplate and tighten connections without any further wiring work. We always inspect the wiring condition while the socket is open, as loose or degraded connections behind sockets are a common safety issue in Edinburgh's older properties.

Kitchen sockets are on circuits protected by the RCD. If a kitchen socket is causing the RCD to trip, it's usually a faulty appliance causing earth leakage, moisture ingress in the socket, or a damaged cable. We test each appliance and the socket wiring to isolate the cause.

Socket repairs in kitchens and bathrooms are notifiable under Part P. In other rooms, certification is best practice. We always issue a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate for socket repair work as standard — protecting you and your Edinburgh property.
