Common Questions

RCDs trip when they detect earth leakage current — which can be caused by a faulty appliance, degraded cable insulation, moisture in fittings, or a genuine wiring fault. In Edinburgh's older properties, aged rubber or fabric-sheathed wiring is a common cause. We use insulation resistance testing to identify the exact source.

If the circuit trips every time you reset it, don't keep resetting it — there is an active fault present. Repeatedly resetting a tripped breaker can damage appliances and, in the case of a genuine earth fault, create a safety risk. Call us to diagnose and resolve the issue properly.

Yes — intermittent trips are harder to diagnose but very common. We use insulation resistance testing and load simulation to find wiring that's failing under certain conditions. Thermal imaging can also reveal hot spots that aren't obvious during normal operation.

Yes — a single faulty appliance with an internal earth fault can cause the entire circuit's RCD to trip. We isolate appliances methodically to identify which one is causing the issue. Once found, we confirm whether the fault is the appliance itself or the wiring feeding it.

An MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker) trips on overcurrent — too many appliances or a short circuit. An RCD (Residual Current Device) trips on earth leakage — a potential electric shock risk. Both need investigating but the diagnostic approach is different. We'll identify which device is tripping and why.
