Consumer unit upgrades in Edinburgh & The Borders
Every property has a Distribution Board (also referred to as a Consumer Unit in domestic settings). This is the central point of your properties electrical system, where the main supply cable splits off into multiple circuits throughout the property. These can also be commonly known as a fusebox, fuseboard or switchboard, or even just ‘the electrical box’.
Your consumer unit is the central hub of all the wiring within in your home, and contains the protective devices which, in the event of a fault, will automatically disconnect the supply, keeping you and your property safe. Many homes built in the 60s, 70s and 80s will still have their original consumer units in place- these may be functioning fine but the reality is that they fall far short of todays standards are doing very little to protect you in the event of a fault. A good sign that your installation is from the era is to look out for old rewireable fuses (like below)- these are certainly 50+ years old. Beware if you are replacing the fuse wire in the white ceramic type (picture on the right), as these often contain a small piece of asbestos as a flash guard- another great reason to get it removed!
Regular testing and inspection is essential to ensure that these devices are in good working condition and up to modern day safety standards. Regulations and the technology involved have advanced at an incredible pace over the last couple of decades.
